Salome was an obsession long before this commission – years of research during my academic career, the biblical princess, the severed head, the whole dark mythology of it. So when The Village Voice asked me to draw her holding the head of John the Baptist, there was nothing to research. Just a blank page and no excuses.
The illustration was created for The Only Women Left Alive – a piece on the Metropolitan Opera's 2017 premieres. Later shortlisted for the World Illustration Awards 2017.
